The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is seeking a Content Writer/Editor on a contract basis who will play a key role on the communications team, supporting the development of a full suite of products – print, web, and social media – to communicate on behalf of a 33,000-membership association. This contract role supports the Vice President, Communication and Public Policy and the Director, Digital Experience, and is a key driver to support writing, content curation, and community oversight associated with AFP’s communications and online platforms. In addition, the contractor will play a key role in reviewing and creating new content for AFP’s new website to launch in 2018. 

The Content Writer/Editor is responsible for quality, consistency, and timeliness of all content for all audiences: internal, the general public and critical stakeholders including policy makers. This is especially critical, as the Content Writer/Editor must be comfortable working with technology and on “back end” processes, such as posting articles, video and other content/edit on AFP’s online platforms, preparing and scheduling e-communications and newsletters, working with databases, and other similar activities. 

Scope of Services


Write creative, effective and accurate copy. 
• Strive to provide Plain English external communications.
• Support multiple communication tasks simultaneously, including multiple document versions and tight deadlines to provide high quality, creative, accurate and consistent copy.
• Write, edit, and manage press releases, fact sheets, Q&As, and other AFP documents for Board review and publication;
• Participate in writing and preparing content for the development of a new AFP website;
• Support AFP’s website content management system, post new content, and oversee existing content and media;
• Support social media content and activity;
• Manage member communities in closed AFP discussion communities;
• Support communications strategy and tactics;
• Maintain standards of confidentiality with respect to all matters and documents;
• Exercise discretion and independent judgment on a daily basis; and,
• Perform other duties and special projects, as needed.


Qualifications and Skills

• Minimum of three years of progressive experience writing, copyediting, and proofreading in journalism, public affairs or media relations; proofreading and copyediting skills; familiarity with AP style;
• Maturity to deal with organizational leadership and senior managers on complex and sensitive matters;
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral; clarity in speech and writing;
• Ability to translate technical ideas into Plain English and creative writing;
• Standard communication technology skills to learn our website CMS and email distribution systems;
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently, meet deadlines, know when to seek help.

Required Education

• Bachelor's degree.
